I'd fix the 2 wires to the ect first. That check engine light can really plague how the car runs.

I bet the little rubber stopper for the brake light switch is gone. Look on the brake pedal, there will be a small switch attached to it that when the brakes are pressed it pulls the pedal away from the switch and the brake lights turn on. The soldered connections on the back of the ignition switch will sometimes melt and create the smoke that you have seen. I had the exact same problem. They're lightweight, have the awesome double wishbone suspension, and the swap options are endless. I have one I'm using for a track car and it has performed very well. And there is a lot of aftermarket support!

Told you. Lol. I've seen a lot of distributor issues since our distributors can be really old. The o-ring had probably dried up and got hard and allowed oil to seep into the distributor.

You could buy a low mileage jdm longblock and swap it in. The are reasonably priced and may be cheaper than a rebuild.
