ok i want to thanks Haysoos for sending me on this treck of the sway bar. it started out as a compatibility like this:
but the more and more i thought about it, the more i started remembering my knowledge of rear sway bars. so i started this list of a large precents of the cars from Honda/Acura 1988-present day. the list will start in order as: subcompact, coupe', and sport. this how Honda/Acura/Wiki list them.

EDIT:HondVX brought some indepth of the 88-00 Civic/Integra parts compatability.

This is to be the most accurate from what i know between the 88-95 civic. never really tried with the 96-00 civics. I would say that 99% 88-00 parts are changeable.(honda tends to do stuff like that). If you know of some errors that got past me, or dealt with the 96-00 civics and parts interchange please lmk and I will update what has been missed.

Keep in mind switching stuff out will work, but it may change your offset, toe, and camber.


Front upper control arm (UCA)
-(UCA) can be swapped for a 94-01 Integra Upper control arm … no performance advantage BUT it is easier to find newer Integra ones at the Wreckers.
-Note: The ball joint in the UCA is not replaceable … Honda does not sell the ball-joint alone, you generally replace the entire A-Arm
-The UCA's can be swapped Left to right, BUT since the upper balljoint is not symetric (front to back) this swap will cause an increase in Caster.

Front lower Control Arm (LCA)
-LCA can be swapped for a 94-01 Integra Lower control arm…. no performance advantage BUT it is easier to find newer Integra LCA's at the Wreckers.
-I have also found that it is cheaper/easier to swap in a nice new 99-01 Integra LCA than to replace all the bushings
-Integra's came with front sway bars, as did some Civics, thus have the necessary flange to attach the sway-bar end-links. So if you need to change a sway bar equipped Civic LCA, make sure that the donor car also had a sway bar

Front Steering knuckle
-There are two types of front steering knuckles found on a Civic. The knuckles found on a civic with 9.5" diameter brake rotors and the knuckles found on a civic with 10.2" diameter brake rotors. These two knuckles are not compatible with one another, different brake caliper brackets, bearings, and hubs.
-The 10.3" equipped 90-91 civic 4d(non-abs), 95-97 del sol vtec(abs), 99-00 Civic Si(abs) knuckles are the same as the 10.3" 94-01 Integra(RS non-abs, LS/GS/GSR ABS) (except ITR) front steering knuckles.
-The Other Bolt-on option for EG Civics' is the Integra Type R … the 96 JDM 4x114 lug, or the 97-00 5x114 5 lug 11" setup will bolt up without any issues.
-There is one final difference between front knuckles … ABS. ABS equipped cars NEED ABS hubs/knuckles for the sensors to work, so make sure if your car is ABS equipped that you get a ABS equipped Knuckle

Front Shocks,
-ANY 88-00 Civic or 94-01 Integra (including the ITR) front shocks will bolt up to the 5th Gen.
-4th Gen front shocks will bolt up ONLY if you use the 4th Gen. lower shock fork. 4th Gens use a shock body that is smaller so you have to use fork than came with the shock.
-Further 4th Gen note: 4th Gens. have less suspension travel than 5 or 6th Gen civics, thus the shock bodies are shorter than 5th or 6th gens, so you can run out of shock travel, particularly when lowered, and could bottom out with 4th Gen shocks in a 5th or 6th Gen civic.

Front Springs
-ANY 88-00 Civic or 94-01 Integra front springs will bolt up to the 5th Gen, but there will be a difference in ride height depending on what spring you use.
-Integra Springs generally have a higher spring rate than the Civic springs (stiffer) but not by much.
-The ITR on the other hand has a much higher rate spring than a regular Integra or a Civic and a EG sits about 1"lower than stock … so it is a nice upgrade for 5TH GENS

Front Sway-bar
-All 88-00 Civic and 94-01 Integra sway-bar may be swapped in as long as you get the associated end-links, bushings and D-brackets.
-If your car did NOT originally come with a sway bar you have to swap in the LCA's from a sway bar equipped 88-00 Civic or 94-01 Integra

Front Sub-frame
The 88-00 Civic and 94-01 Integra front sub-frames are compatible with one another, but there seems to be a difference between sub-frames the manual steering and power steering equipped cars …I have not been able to confirm or deny this yet

Front Sub-Frame Brace
-The 95-97 DelSol Vtec (DOHC) and 94-01 Integra front sub-frame brace will bolt up to ANY 92-95 Civic sub-frame. This helps stiffen up the lower suspension mounts point s and do NOT hang down below the car like most aftermarket lower braces (not sure if 88-91, or 96-00 never tried)


Trailing arms
-There are two types, Disk brake equipped, and Drum brake equipped.
-The Disk brake equipped trailing arms are compatible with all Disk brake equipped 88-00 Civic trailing arms, and 94-01 Integra trailing arms.
-These disk brake trailing arms are also VERY similar to 88-00 Civic and 90-93 Integra rear disk trailing arms … there is only a small difference in a couple of accessory brackets I believe.

Upper control arms (UCA)
I "think" they are compatible with the 94-01 Teg … but I am not 100% yet There is some discussion if the length of the arm varies by Generation … but the mounting points are the same (chassis and trailing arm)

Front compensator arms (toe arms)
-They are compatible with the 94-01 Teg Compensator arms

Lower control arms (LCA)
-There are two types … sway bar equipped and non sway bar equipped LCA's
-All 89-95 Civics/CRX's EXCEPT the Civic EX-V, CRXsi, and DelSol Vtec have similar LCA's that do NOT have the mounting point for a sway-bar end-link
-The DelSol Vtec, the 89-91 CRX si and the 92-95 Civic EX-V have a rear sway bar and as a result their LCA's have mounting points for the Sway-bar end-links.
-The DelSol Vtec and EX-V LCA's are the SAME as the 94-00 Integra LCA's (non ITR) as all Integra's came with rear sway bars.
-The Sway bar equipped LCA's can be swapped for the non-sway bar equipped LCA's with any problems
-ITR's and the 88 CRX use a different style LCA … the shocks lower mounting is a "EYE" style where the shock goes thru the LCA and is bolted thru …
-The Rest of the Civic's/Integra's use a "Shackle" style lower shock mount where the shock bolts around the LCA.
-So if you want to use 88 CRX or ITR rear shocks on your EG civic you must use ITR LCA's
-Note: in Japan most 92-95 Civics' used the ITR style LCA

-ANY 89-95 Civic or 94-01 Integra (except ITR) rear shock will bolt up to the 5th Gen. The 88 Civic or ITR rear Shock will bolt up but you need to use the ITR style 88 Civic LCA or the ITR LCA
-Further 4th Gen note: 4th Gens. have less suspension travel than 5 or 6th Gen civics, thus the shock bodies are shorter than 5th or 6th gens, so you can run out of shock travel, particularly when lowered, and could bottom out with 4th Gen shocks in a 5th or 6th Gen civic.
The 96-00 Civic Shocks will bolt up BUT you need to narrow the LCA Shock bushing as these shocks have narrower lower shackles.

-Rear sway bars came only on the 88-95 Civic/CRX Si, EX-V, and the DelSol Vtec. So these sway bars can be bolted up to any non sway bar equipped EF/EG …IF you use the appropriate LCA's. End-links, D-brackets, bushings, and bolts.
-There are holes to mount the sway-bar bracket to the rear sub-frame … but there might not be any captive nuts for the bolt to attach to, but you can add these easy enough.
-The Sway bars from the 94-01 Integra's can also be bolted up to a EF/EG, BUT the 22mm rear bar WILL tear out the rear sub-frame unless it is reinforced with a Beaks kit or similar setup.

-92-95 Civic Si/EX, 13mm
-Del Sol Vtec (DOHC) 15mm
-94-00 Integra RS/LS 13mm
-94-00 Integra GSR 14mm
-97-00 Integra Type R (ITR) 22mm

lapatx 88-91 big brake upgrade info with OEM parts

now this list is really informative for several reasons. for starters honda/acura got it right while the american cars lost out. please let me explain. the reason why i stated this like the rear sway bar. reguardless the thickness, what car, they are the same length from end to end and they bolt up in the same place w/some variation(and i can explain this in a hundred ways). again there different variation to this rule.
rules are made to be bent and broken. thanks to A Spec Racing subframe brace(ASR). i will give you and example:

1988-1991 rear sway bar for Crx/Civic/Integra/Prelude are bent the sameway. so the brackets and bars will bolt up w/no problem other than if you a Crx Dx/HF the don't have the frame under bolts. so you can bolt up the brackets(except the Si have them). there is a thread on how to place those bolt there.

now ASR is in the process in making a subfame brace for these years but theres ways around this problem. you just use a ASR brace from a 92-95 Civic or integra 94-01 then you can bypass the 88-90 sway bar and you then can bolt up a sway bar from 92-00 Civic and 94-01 Integra.

EDIT:92-92 civic coupe dx did not come w/front or rear sway bar. so i had to make an admendment to this cause a member pointed it out that i had all this info but i didn't have the parts i needed to put into a 5th gen. so here the pics and then the list of what you need afterwards.

for putting a front sway bar in a 92-95 civic coupe.


for installing a front sway bar in the front you need everything from a 92-95 Ex/ a 4dr sdn on both side. minus 13, 14 and 17. you don't need these. whats cool ist everything else is usally all together already.

putting a rear sway bar in and 92-00 honda civic, if yours didn't have one


you will need the rear lower control arms, rear sway bar, the sway bar attachmemnts to the frame, and all the do hickys needed. if you see pic #17 and #19. you notice that #17 doesn't have the sway bar eye(hence dx) and #19 has it. now here the cool part you can use the r/lca of any 88-00 honda civic and 90-01 acucra integra. you might have to adjust the camber but i provided the means in how to.

very important fact: you must be very gentle removing the r/lca bolts(#40). especially if you live in the northeast due to rust and rock salt. they tend to sieze and they will snap. i know i've snap them, and you don't need to apply alot of presure. thats why i always have extra r/lca bots. i stay w/6 or more in my tool box. so if you're going to change your lca. heed my words make sure you have extra bolts.

EDIT: well since i have everything you need in swapping and what not, i thought i would add the rear disc converion to complete you supension education. brought to by Rexinre:

now we take the EP Civic Hb 2001-2005. their F/R sway bars are intercahnge able w/the RSX. but i'm still seeing if there are other cars that are interchangeable.

EDIT: i want to also state that when the 5th gen of civic started, they made standard the front sway bar hollow. they've been hollow already since 1990 for integra and prelude. now before you ask a 23mm/F hollow sway bar is the same thing as a 19mm/F solid now my understandment on this has to do with weight and the charactistics of the sway bars. while the rear sway bars have stayed solid. the rear adjustable ASR 25mm sway bar bar that is in the early stages right now. it will be with adjustable arms and you can adjust it somewhere in rate similar to a 17mm - 22mm bar. now that's great for the road courser/autoxing ppl. here's the thread that has it w/pics:

EDIT: ok i'm going even explain this in a very easy summary. when it comes to the difference between the rear lower control arms(r/lca) between 88-00 Honda and 90-01 Acura it's only an 1/16 of and inch. very small. to fix this you need to do the same thing you do when you have a negative degree camber. the same thing you do w/a rear disc converion. there to simple two option. the first get a camber kit and have someone adjust it or the second the wash trick. here:

EDIT: i think my next adventure is measuring the bar lenghten or sway bar eye to sway bar eye on the r/lca. cause the reason is and i'm going on a hunch. if i'm correct every sway bar 1988-2000 Honda and 1990-2001 Acura are the same lenghten. they all have different end links, bracket sizes but uses the same size r/lca bolt. now what that means is the combo are endless to an extent. the same goes w/the front sway bar too.i know for a fact the the 4th, 5th and i want to say the 6th gen Civics are the same as 3rd and 4th gen prelude. and i gonna boldly say the same for the for all Integra going into the Hondas. oh i want to add the key of making these sway bars mixing and migling are their barckets. you see they used the same bolt but their brackets are made for the bars.
again there still is a bit of research i need to do.

as time goes along i will try to update as much as i can. i want to say since i'm a forum whore joiner. there are no other type of car lovers like our gerne. why? you ask anyone of us about anything that has to do w/hondas/acura. we can spew it down to the smallest do-hicky, size, depth and pitch. i've joined many forum and when you ask a question? they're like wtf is that.(i.e. Fit forum they are a bunch of dumdasses.) so if you're a Honda/Acura owner please give thank cause there are other car gerne that are not as helpful as our.

Footnote: the reason i picked these model cars cause these are models we tend to do performance to; they are compact cars(except the Fit it's Subcompact car.). we tend to call them "sport compact cars". the only cars i didn't include was the Accord. for couple of reasons, but the main reason it's a tank. then i would have to include all the Acura(CL, TL, RL) cause they would fall in the same class of mid size cars(not scc). one statement...V.I.P.

Cornering Problems and Common Solutions - from a suspension article.

Springs, antisway bars, and track bars provide significant tuning opportunities. Changing any one of those components can drastically affect understeer (push) and oversteer (loose). Separating a corner into three segments (entrance, middle, and exit) provides three important reference points to analyze what the suspension is doing. For example, a car can be loose in certain parts of the corner and neutral or tight in other parts. Racers tune for good forward bite combined with an overall neutral feel. When you determines suspension changes, you should often goes by these accepted rules of thumb on road courses:

If the car is tight overall, try using a softer front antisway bar, stiffer rear springs, using softer front springs, or a combination of them all.

If the car is loose going into the corner, use a stiffer front antisway bar, a softer rear sway bar, or a combination of these solutions. If the car is loose exiting the corner, use a stiffer front antisway bar, softer rear springs, or a combination of the two.

An antisway bar behaves much like a progressive spring. That in theory, an antisway bar (front or back) should accent the outside tire in the middle of the corner. When it’s right, it will help provide forward bite as the car starts to exit the corner. Be cautions against using stiffer springs in the rear when a stiffer antisway bar is really needed. The stiffer springs don’t help provide as much forward bite, and braking could suffer.

More stuff for this great suspension thread :thumbright: . The following info is from the famous Ben Ogle page: if you haven't visited it I suggest you to do, it's a great resource for the civic 4g community. This article is on what can be changed or swapped on the suspension and brakes among other honda models.

Hybrid EF suspension/brakes. By Ben Ogle

Our cheap little EFs come stock with potentially wonderful fully-independent, unequal length, double wishbone suspension. They are the first civics to contain such a great leap of engineering design (heh). On top of this, the Honda designers were cheap enough to use similar suspension parts from this bitchin' design on some of their other models, like the Integra and other, newer civics. Know what that means? Yep, hybridization. I'm here to tell you what works, what doesn't and hopefully why.

UCA = upper control arm
LCA = lower control arm
DA = 90-93 integra
DC = 94+ integra
EG = 92-95 civic
EF = 88-91 civic
EX = trim model of one of the 90-91 4 door civics

If at any time the word "shock" pisses you off, I will gladly let you substitute in the word "damper."

Rear suspension

Rear LCA:
If you have an 88, your car has the "box in" type lower control arms. These aren't bad by any means, they are even lighter than any of the solid cast LCA's that all of the rest of civic/integra family uses. But it may be tough to find good aftermarket shocks that fit inside them. Or maybe you just want to use some readily available shocks or shocks you got a good deal on. If you plan to use shocks for an 89-91 civic/crx then you need to swap out the LCA's.

You can obviously use 89-91 LCA's. But it should be noted that some models didn't come with a sway bar and so they don't have the threaded holes for the sway endlinks. So try and get some with the threaded holes. If you don't, you will regret it later.

You can also use EG rear LCA's. They are the exact same length and all I've seen have had the holes for the sway bar links.

You can use DC and DA LCA's. But they are a 1/16" longer so you will end up with more negative camber in the rear. If you use these it would be wise to then switch to integra UCA's. Then at least your camber will stay the same.

Rear UCA:
There isn't a whole lot to this. The EG and EF upper control arms are the same length. The DA and DC UCA's are 1/16" longer. You can use them as cheap camber correction if you have EF/EG LCA's.

Trailing arms:
These are really only swapped out because of the brakes attached to them. The DA trailing arms are a good choice because they have 9.5" disc brakes hanging off them (same size as your DX's front brakes) and they can be had for cheap. Other than the brakes the trailing arms are identical. I don't know about DC or EG trailing arms and I'm not about to buy a set and spend an afternoon putting them on just to see if they fit. I have heard of them going on DA integras so I'd imagine they work on EFs too. If you know from experience let me know.

When swapping from drums to discs you will need the rear rubber brakelines (or ss if you like) and the e-brake cables from an EF Si or a DA integra.

If you have non-88 LCA's, any EF, DA or EG/DC rear shock will fit, but some are better than others. The DA shock, for instance, is about 1.5" longer than the stock EF shock. Just for the record, this height difference is ABOVE the perch. That means that your car will be the same height regardless of what shock you run. Travel is your friend and there is no sense in putting a longer shock in there unless you are going to raise it up and go rallying. The DA shocks, though, are valved stiffer than their EF counterpart.

Well, the 89-91 Civic and the 92-00 Civic use the same rear shock. This is actually slightly softer than what the 90-93 Integra is but by a very small, likely unnoticeable difference. The Civic lengths though are still about an inch shorter than the Integra pieces. Thanks for writing."

If you have 88 LCA's then you can put DC Type R shocks in there. Whoopee.

Sway bar:
If you have a model that didn't have a sway bar then this is for you. If it did come with a sway bar then you are lucky and the only upgrade you will get is from an aftermarket bar.

Your EF will accept either an Si rear sway (15mm) or a DA rear sway (14.7mm for the coupe, 15.9mm for the sedan). You can identify the size of the bar by the #s molded into the bushing:
But if your car didn't come with one originally it is NOT a bolt in affair. See, the non-rear sway equipped cars didn't come with nice threaded holes in the control arms for the links, or holes (with welded nuts behind) in the frame rails for the sway locating brackets. So a sway install is a bit of a pain in the ass. I have installed both an Si rear sway and a DA rear bar on non-sway equipped cars, and the bars are really pretty much the same. The biggest difference, though, is the sway locating brackets. These are shorter for the EF than they are for the DA (assuming because of the less rear overhang in the civic/crx) so getting the EF version is preferred.

What I did was mock up the sway bar under the car, make some marks on the frame rails, then drill all the way into the trunk. Yes, into the trunk. Then I used some long grade 8 bolts for the brackets. That is the only way I could think of to get a good hold on them. I was not about to cut into the side of the frame rail and weld some nuts into the holes I drilled. If you have any other methods please let me know.

Aftermarket stuff:
Springs: DA, EG, and DC drop springs all fit but you probably don't want to use them because they were made for a heavier car and wont give you the drop they advertise. Coilovers, however, are fair game from 88-00 civics and integras. The integra versions tend to come with stiffer springs than the civic ones so keep that in mind.

Bars: Adjustable lower tie bars from any 88-00 civic/integra fit. Adjustable upper strut bars from a DA fit, and probably so do the adj. strut bars from an EG/DC. Fixed length lower ties from a DA fit, EG/DC do not (they are longer by about 3/8"). No other fixed length rear upper strut fits the EF chassis, not even the DA rear strut bar. Trust me. I make them and have both a DA and an EF.

Front suspension


These, like the trailing arms, are really only changed because of the brakes. If you have a model that isn't an EX you have 9.5" brakes (the Si's may be a little bigger). If you have an EX you have 10.3" brakes. If you don't have an EX then you have really only 2 (good) choices: EX knuckles and DA teg knuckles.

The EX knuckles are regarded as the best knuckle upgrade for any EF civic. This is because they don't have any geometry differences and because they were "made" for a civic. The only problem with them is that they are a tad hard to find and become expensive if you want to get them from a junkyard with the brakes attached.

The DA knuckles (also with 10.3" brakes) on the other hand are plentiful, cheap and work great as well. They are, however, a bit heavier weighing in at 6lbs 7oz more per side than a full DX knuckle. Also, because they weren't made for any civic the geometry differences have been blown way out of proportion by message board folks and because of this, a lot of people are scared of the swap. The knuckles are ¼" taller than the civic knuckles but really, it is nothing. It raises the roll center ever so slightly and makes the camber curve a tiny bit more aggressive. So what? Who said the geometry was perfect to begin with? And caster is NOT affected by knuckles. It is determined by the ball joint locations on the control arms. So stop saying the knuckles themselves change/screw up caster! They don't and never will.

You can put the DA calipers and rotors on EX knuckles without any issues.

I have the DA knuckles myself and have to say that I have not felt nor seen ANY adverse effects, even after a full season of autox with them. I even switched back to DX knuckles for a while and noted absolutely NO gain, only a loss in braking power.

One of these days I will get my hands on an integra knuckle and a civic knuckle when I can really sit down and measure them both. Once again I don't know about the EG/DC knuckles. I have seen some threads about people having major camber problems with them but have no personal experience so I cant say.

Front UCA's:
Don't use DA integra UCA's. This is where a lot of people go wrong when using the DA knuckles. They use these UCA's and it gives them positive camber and less caster. Then they blame it on the knuckles. Waaaaaa...

The EG/DC UCA's don't fit at all. The distance between the anchor bolts is completely different between the EF/DA's and the EG/DC's. Look:

Brake system:
If you have a DX or something similar you have a 13/16 master cylinder. That is small. 15/16" MCs that bolt right up to your stock booster are: 88-91 prelude, 89or so accord LXi, and 90-91 civic EX. You can also use the 90-93 integra 15/16 (non ABS) MC but you NEED to use the booster as well. If you want to use the DA 1" ABS MC and booster you have to put a different fitting (its larger) on one of the lines that goes into the MC.

On top of all that you can use a 1" MC from an ITR or a DC GSR. For that you will need both the MC and the booster, then you need to re-bend one of the lines to get it to bolt up. Fortunately there are no differences in the fitting sizes like with the DA 1" MC.

I personally have the DA 1" MC/booster and it is great. The fitting was kind of a pain but definitely not impossible if you own a flaring tool. If you have disc brakes all around and they didn't come stock you probably should swap out your stock proportioning valve for one that says "40/40" on the side. This comes in Si and EX 88-91 civics, and DA integras.

You can use DA front shocks with no modification. The only problem is that they are around 1" longer in the body (stock vs stock) and that means less travel in your lowered car. It seems, though, that many aftermarket companies feel that the DA and EF shocks are so similar that there is no need to make two different products. Examples include the tokico blues shown below and kyb AGXs (same part number). I had AGXs and they were longer than my stock EF shocks, shorter than my stock DA shocks, and 1/2" longer than my EF Koni Yellows. Odd, eh?

You can also use EG/DC shocks (EG shocks are exactly the same as DC shocks) if you feel so inclined. All you need to do is use EG/DC forks. Heres what Gordon Benson at koni has to say about the front EG/DC shocks vs DA and EF shocks (koni yellows anyway):

"The valving for all of those applications are different because they are all for different vehicles. When we create a valving for a shock, we tailor it to the needs of that car and not try to fit one valving for many. Of these ones you listed, the 90-93 Integra is firmest in compression and rebound. The 94+ Integra (and 92-00 Civic) is about the same in rebound but slightly softer in compression and the 88-91 Civic is valved the "softest" though it isn't by a lot."

Then more specifically the EF vs EG koni shock:

"...the biggest change with the 88-91 and the 92-00 Civic is that the lower "wishbone" (what the shocks go into on the bottom) is smaller on the 88-91 cars. This can be interchanged though the lengths and the valving between the 2 Civic applications isn't worth the work. The valving is basically identical and the lengths are less than a half inch of each other."

The EF and DA forks are exactly the same and so are the EG and DC and all 4 of them have the same height (no matter what anyone tells you). The only difference between the EF/DA forks and the EG/DC forks is that the EG/DC forks have an inside diameter .15" larger than the EF/DA forks. This is because the EG/DC shocks are fatter than their EF counterparts.

With a little fork modification it is possible to use the DC/EG forks with EF shocks and gain around ¾" of shock travel by slipping the fork OVER the bottom of the brake line bracket.

Front sway bar:
All the non-Hf EFs come with an 18mm front sway. The Hf has a 17mm front sway and it bolts right on to your non-Hf. DA integras come with 22mm front sways which bolt on, but you probably don't want to use it because it will result in MORE understeer. From my understanding the EG/DC front sways don't bolt in.

Aftermarket stuff:
Springs: Again, you probably don't want to use the drop springs from another car because it will result in screwed up ride height. But any 88-00 civic/integra coilovers work just fine.

Bars: None of the other civics/integras have a front lower tie that works, not even the DA. Adjustable DA front strut bars fit and adjustable EG/DC ones do not. I am not sure whether fixed length DA front strut bars fit as I have only made one for my EF and have not tried it on the DA.

This isn't entirely true, The 88-91 Civic STD has no sway bars, front nor rear, and the lower control arms have no mounting points for them. Also the Civic STD has a different hub, so axles from Civic DX, EX, and SI won't work.
