Need help

Postby Jdroundy » Tue Mar 15, 2016 7:19 am

Recently, I just started seeing smoke come out from my steering wheel area. I went to go get it checked the next day and the guy I go to says it is the ignition wire. He sees a burnt spot on the wire. I tried looking up the part but I can't find the wire that I saw under my steering wheel. Is there a specific name for this part? I have a 91 honda civic dx hatchback.

Also, my dashboard lights have gone out but my headlights are still working well. Does this mean I may have to change the whole wiring system by my ignition?

That depends on how badly your car burned. If it's just the ignition switch, you can get that easy.

Am I suppose to notice any burned marks on any wire? I tried looking for it but I can't find anything. I don't know if I should buy that part if i'm not that sure thats the actual problem. Also, my dashboard lights have gone off. I haven't checked my fuses yet but I read a couple other forums that had this problem and they said it was not the fuses..

Check your fuses. Also, the ign. switch is so cheap you can swap it out and see if it works. It might not have visible damage.

The soldered connections on the back of the ignition switch will sometimes melt and create the smoke that you have seen. I had the exact same problem. You will not be able to see it unless you pull the ignition switch, and it is a pretty easy part to change and not too expensive.

Once you pull it out, take a look at the connections on the back, you should be able to see where the soldered has melted off.

UPDATE: Still haven't got the new ignition switch.

Back lights have gone out. Does that still include a bad ignition switch?

Yeah, it does still sound like it COULD be the cause(not by all means the only possibility)
