Best Fit Door Speaker Upgrade

Postby onyx2002 » Thu Sep 13, 2007 4:05 am

Guys,

Gonna upgrade Front Door Speakers on my 90 DX, I just wanted to know if these are indeed 5 1/2 inch speakers ( Pretty sure they are) and are there any brands/types in particular that fit better than others with minimal modification etc... Mine are still stock...I'm sure alot of you have done this.. Any insight from your install will be a great help

I have a 1991 dx sedan and I changed mine out years ago with Pioneer Premier Components. When you take the cover over the speakers off, you will see that there is a bracket that holds the speaker in the door. You will need to take the whole bracket out with the speaker. You have to do this so that you can cut the basket off the back of the bracket to make room for the new aftermarket speaker. I used a grinding wheel but you can use a hack saw or whatever you have handy that will cut plastic. The factories are cheap and slim. Your new speakers will most likely be much bigger depth wise, thus the reason you have to do this. They still sound great and don't affect the sound. Alpine also makes very decent speakers. I have been told that Alpine actually manufactures the sound systems for honda, not sure how true that is. I know for my wifes 2001 civic sedan alpine provides the brackets with speakers that go in the door, because the factory bracket won't work. Not sure if they do the same for the 88 to 91 civics. I hope this helps. A good place to check out car audio stuff for a cheap price is www.sonicelectronix.com. You will have to click on all other manufacturers in the left side bar to be able to pull up the alpine products.

Oh, I also forgot. I think the door speakers are 5 1/4 not 5 1/2. You can check what size you need on www.crutchfield.com or www.metraonline.com :D

All 4 speakers on the CRX are 6.5". Be careful what speakers you get though because the Pioneer 4-Way that I got were too thick so when I rolled my windows down it would hit the magnet of the speaker; the Infiniti 2-Ways I got after that didn't.

I bought a 90 dx hatch without rear speaker pods and a 91 dx with rear speaker pods. It probably was an option.

Does that make sense? I mean, i have a CX. CX NO options. A DX More Options. SE, Basically an SI with, more "options". Whats teh point in cx/dx/std/si if you could get all teh options in a std or what have you?
