Clutch Help for Different Model Years

So my car has needed a clutch since I bought it a few months ago. If I'm a little too rough with it it'll get hot and start to slip easily when I shift. It also needs a driver side axle and I may as well put in a tranny while I have it out (it'll grind going from 2nd to 1st if I'm doing anything more than 5mph and sometime from 4th to 3rd). I picked up a fairly fresh DX tranny for $100. The problem I may have is my car is an 88 DX and the guy I bought the tranny from told me he was using a 91 DX clutch with that tranny. When I went to looking up clutches I realized the 88 model had a different part number from the other years. This is what I got from autozone:

1988 - P/N NU31181A -- OD 7 1/2" ID 27/32" 21 Splines
1989 - P/N NU31181 ---- OD 7 7/8" ID 7/8" 20 Splines
1990 - P/N NU31182 ---- OD 8 3/8" ID 7/8" 20 Splines
1991 - P/N NU31182 ---- OD 8 3/8" ID 7/8" 20 Splines

So what difference is there in the drivetrains from the different years (flywheel, clutch, transmission, axles)?

I'm using this car as a daily and a delivery car for Domino's Pizza. It already has 257,xxx miles so I'm not too sure how much longer this motor will last. When it does go I plan on swapping in a D16Z6, so whatever I do for a clutch I would like for it to be able to handle a basically stock Z6. An OEM quality clutch would be preferred.

A little background information first:

1988 was an oddball year, a 21 spline input shaft, a 21 spline clutch disc, smaller flywheel + disc + pressure plate.

In 1989 Honda went over to the 20 spline input shaft, and they kept that 20 spline for a number of years. BUT the flywheel, clutch disc, and pressure plate were still small for 1989.

Then in 1990 up to the late 1990's all the engines (example: D15B1/B2/B7, D16A6/Z6/Y8) all used the exact same Flywheel, Clutch Disc, and Pressure Plate combination. Honda kept the 20 splines, but made the flywheel, clutch disc, and pressure plate bigger.

Now that we have that cleared up, here's what you need to do since you plan on D16Z6 swapping in the future:

You need a 1990 and newer flywheel. It can be off of a D15B1/B2/B7, D16A6/Z6/Y8 as they all use the SAME flywheel. You can buy a remanufactured one from Autozone, or simply buy used and have it resurfaced.

Then your clutch set (pressure plate, clutch disc, throwout bearing) also needs to be 1990 and newer, it doesn't matter if it's 1990, 1991, 1992, etc....just as long as it's 1990 and newer :)

Now the axles can be 1988 to 1991, but they must be for the STD or DX model. Because the EX models used bigger hubs, and the 1992+ Civic's also used bigger hubs aswell. You can swap in EX hubs, brake rotors, brake calipers, etc... if you would like to upgrade your brake system. Or you could just keep your stock ones and run new rotors and a new set of EBC greenstuff pads

Thanks you so much for the quick response and all the helpful info. I figure I'll just get a flywheel from autozone and a clutch kit and call it a day. I had a flywheel resurfaced a couple months ago and it was like $40. Not too bad considering I couldn't just buy another one of those flywheels, but that's not the case with this car. And for $55 for a "new" one I may as well.

The A6 clutch is the same as the B2 clutch, so I'm assuming people have used a stock clutch on a ZC? And if it can handle that then it shouldn't have any trouble with a Z6.

Not sure about the ZC, such an oddball engine :-\

but to answer your question, just make sure you break that clutch in for 500 miles...and you'll be golden ;)

Yeah, I'll be sure to break it in properly. Lucky me I can go through 500 miles in a week no problem driving for Domino's, lol.

One more concern, will my 88 starter engage a 91 flywheel properly? Or is the diameter of the flywheel the same, just the friction area is larger?

Never mind. I just looked up the part numbers and they're the same. So I guess the answer is I'll have no problem whatsoever.

Oh yes, the starter will engage the flywheel just fine. It's just a larger friction surface, the diameter of the flywheel is the same. $40 is a typical labor fee for a flywheel resurface, but I recommend getting the Autozone flywheel and clutch set.
