A paint job gone out of controll...my 4G under the knife.

As some of you may know I was planning on a paintjob for a while now and I got it started this january. Working on it when I had the time, not rushing it. But as always, this also got out of hand. A few spots of rust and we decided to do it properly and go over the whole car.

The starting point was good for a 20 year old car with a few kilometers behind it. The few things I wanted to get rid of while I get it painted were the skirts that I never realy liked, the tinted lights, rear panel and turn signals.
Image

Ofc. the fist step was to strip the car as much as possible with the doors and windows still in, at the time it was very cold outside.
And at the moment I kept the bodywork on because I stored it ouside my apartment.

I was fairly pleased that I didn't find anything like kop-O-nen did on his.

The amount of insulation that I found under the backseat was fairly comical

Next step was to take out the front seats, and remaining interior pieces with the exeption of the dash.
The dash vents, heater controll and other misc pieces will be replaced by a stock black set.
Image

At this point I drove it to the person that'll be doing the final bodywork and paint. Bumpers, lights and fenders were removed at this point.
The front fenders were welded to the skirts, and those skirts were VERY solid. You could hit them with a 3kg hammer and not make a dent.

Again, the body was in a good shape under the moldings and bumpers. Dirty as hell but what whould you expect?
Just about what you'd expect from a car this old.

At this point I started working on little things when I could only get to the car on weekends.
I started by cleaning up the rear lights. That tint was on TIGHT!.

And finaly getting my hands on that stock rear panel.
Image

I also ended up needing a new rear bumper as the old one was rusty.
Image
I picked up an other one along with better side moldings and some other misc. items.

While working on the body, we found that someone had welded a second wheel arch on top of the old one at the back and that had caused some rust issues. New parts are on the way. Also, the skirts are gone and new ones are just about to go on.

More on this as something post worthy happends. ;)

siR in progress Someone had "repaired" the drivers side by putting a new one on top of the old one... needless to say it needed some work.  :?

kerzaz The stock D-series dohc engine with bolt ons. D16A9 with some unknown intake, adjustable cam gear and a full martelius exhaust (header + exhaust). I've got a spare head that I'm gonna work on next. That and a new adjustable ecu, but that's after the paint job.

The tint on my lights looked ok, it was fairly well done. I just prefer the stock look. And I don't have to worry about them when I take the car to the annual check up(they're illegal).

Nice Sandman!
You're lucky there's so little rust. Most 4g's in NL are rusty as hell when the panels come off.
Keep us posted 8)

IMO every tint looks bad compared to the original ones.
These were "ok" when they were on. By spray tinging the lights it gives them a cheap look.

bracer Sometimes it feels like it's a never ending battle :D
It's fairly good compared to the age of the car. It's had some rust protection done to it at some point of it's life.

As to the project. I heard today that some of the parts I need have been delayed. Tomorrow if I'm lucky. Probably early next week. :?
Some old guy backed in to my volvo the other day. I ended up getting 450€ from his insurance, these funds have been directed towards a better cause... my 4G. :D

the trick is to take them apart and do the inside

IMO they rarely fit the car they're on. What ever the car is. Kind of like tinted rear windows.
As for the volvo...you can't hurt it even if you try. So why waste money in repairing scratches. :D

If I don't get the parts tomorrow, we'll probably get nothing done this weekend.

the reason i did it was because i have a black rear dressing so i made the lights darker to match it better

Well the parts got delayed alright...estimated date of delivery...30.6!
It seems that somewhere in japan, there's a little jap drawing up the plans to make the part.  :o
I'm not gonna wait for that long, so we just have to improvise.
