1988 Civic Sedan cigarette lighter - when is it power off?

Post by gsmith »

I want to install dashcams in an '88 Civic Sedan. I'd like to use the cigarette lighter socket for power, and I only want the dashcams on and operating when the ignition / engine are on. With engine / ignition off, I want zero power from the socket.

I tested the cigarette lighter socket with a multimeter, and it showed voltage with ignition / engine on, and it showed zero voltage with the ignition off. However, when I pushed the lighter in the socket, the lighter got hot. I'd like to know if the cigarette lighter socket really has zero power / electricity with the ignition / engine off. I have researched this, called around, asked around, and I got no solid information.

Thank you!

It should have power even when the car is off. I would use the switched power from the radio. It'll do exactly what you need it to do, switch off when power is off.
